Welcome to the Seville Cathedral and the
Tomb of Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus’s tomb in Seville Cathedral, Spain is held aloft by four bronze statues of kings to symbolize the Spanish people’s high regard for his ambitions. The statues represent the four kingdoms of Spain that were in power during Columbus’s life: Castille, Aragon, Navarre, and Leon. The sculpture’s message is that the Spanish elevated Columbus above royalty.
Columbus’s remains were originally buried in Valladolid, Spain, where he died in 1506. His son, Diego, then ordered the remains moved to the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas, also known as the Cartuja de Sevilla. Columbus’s remains have been moved multiple times, including to Santo Domingo Cathedral and Cuba.
