Welcome to Córdoba, Spain – Home of the Great Mosque

Córdoba, a historic city in southern Spain’s Andalusia region, was once the capital of the Islamic Caliphate in the 10th century and one of the most advanced cities in medieval Europe. It is renowned for its cultural blend of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish influences — with the Great Mosque of Córdoba as its most iconic monument.

The Great Mosque was originally built in 784 AD by the Umayyad ruler Abd al-Rahman I and expanded over two centuries. It is famous for its stunning horseshoe arches, red-and-white striped columns, and serene courtyard. At its height, it was one of the largest mosques in the world and a center of Islamic learning and worship.

After the Christian Requisition in 1236, the mosque was converted into a Catholic cathedral, and a Renaissance-style nave was later added in the 16th century — making it a unique fusion of Islamic and Christian architecture.
